-de Burca predicts four-way battle for third Dublin seat
Green Party MEP candidate for Dublin Senator Deirdre de Burca, today urged voters to choose their third European Parliament representative with great care. She advised voters to choose someone committed to a properly re-negotiated Lisbon Treaty and sensible economics aimed at growth and jobs.

Senator de Burca said: “My canvass across Dublin city and county for the past two months has convinced me that people have already chosen two of their three MEPs. The opinion polls bear out my view that Gay Mitchell and Proinsias De Rossa will take the first two seats,” Ms de Burca said.

The Green Party candidate said the third seat would boil down to a very close four-way battle between herself, Sinn Fein’s Mary-Lou McDonald, Socialist contender Joe Higgins and Fianna Fail’s Eoin Ryan.

“If you look at those four names – and think of sorting out Lisbon and creating jobs – two people automatically fall out of the ratings. Both Joe Higgins and Mary-Lou McDonald continue to insist on a ‘No to Lisbon’ irrespective of the resultant jobs carnage and they each back reckless borrowing and public spending which would bankrupt Ireland.

“That leaves a choice between myself and Eoin Ryan. He is a decent man and a good politician. But he’s also a long-time part of the political system which over the last decade created the mess we are now in.

“I’m asking Dublin voters to back me because Dublin needs new thinking. The Green Parties – all across Europe – are already working on a different kind of economic development which is in tune with the environment and more sustainable. You can be part of that by voting for me on Friday,” she concluded.
