New FÁS courses will create green jobs

May 22, 2009

Green Party Senator and Euro candidate for Dublin, Deirdre de Burca, welcomed a new FÁS training scheme for people who have lost jobs in the construction sector.

The new FÁS courses are aimed at helping those in construction to upgrade their skills to take advantage of the growing demand for home energy upgrades and other green technology opportunities.

The courses will cover training in building energy ratings, energy efficient insulation and the installation of energy efficient and renewable technologies.

Senator de Burca said, “The recent slowdown in the housing sector means that there are a large number of unemployed people in the construction sector. This latest FÁS course is a really positive step because it provides a large sector of workers in Irish society with the chance to develop new skills.

“In the current economic climate, up-skilling and job flexibility are very important. This is a fantastic opportunity for people to adapt their construction skills for the renewable energy sector.

“Earlier this week the government announced that it has established a high level Action Group on the Green Economy to expand the environmental goods and services market in Ireland.

“This latest wave of FÁS courses will help to raise awareness of environmental issues and will ensure that renewable energy schemes and energy efficient technologies are available to households and business around Dublin.

“I will continue to work to promote the green economy and help eliminate unemployment,” added Senator de Burca.
