Beckett Bridge must be used wisely – de Burca
Green Party Senator and Euro candidate for Dublin, Deirdre de Burca, said that Dublin’s newest bridge should be an integral part of transport plans for the city centre.
The 48 metre high steel bridge was designed by world-famous architect Santiago Calatrava and was built in Rotterdam. It was transported to Dublin on Monday and was safely docked on Thursday despite poor weather conditions.
Senator de Burca said that the bridge will become a landmark for the capital and would help to improve the flow of traffic into the IFSC, the city’s financial centre. The Senator said that the bridge must form part of a well-integrated transport network in Dublin city centre.
“This new structure is particularly important given the latest plans to limit traffic around College Green during peak-times. The bridge will become an important transit point between both sides of Dublin city when it links Guild Street on the northside with Sir John Rogerson’s Quay on the southside.
“We must continue to improve traffic flow through the city centre, ensuring that we consult residents and commuters. Limiting traffic in the city centre will only work in conjunction with improved public transport options.
“Plans to build a Luas line in Fingal, extend the red Luas line in Tallaght and expand the commuter train services around Dublin are extremely important and must be our number one priority.City transport plans meet the diverse needs of all residents of Dublin,” added Senator De Burca.
