Greens split over rugby clash
Party unity has fallen apart over Saturday’s Leinster v Munster showdown
The Green Party is deeply split ahead of this weekend’s Heineken Cup semi-final between Leinster and Munster in Croke Park. In a show of provincial disunity MEP candidates Senator Deirdre de Burca and Dan Boyle today donned their team’s colours ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated rugby game.
According to MEP candidate for Dublin Deirdre de Burca: “I’m not going to pretend to know as much about rugby as Dan pretends to do, except to state that Leinster will win. This is because Leinster has a better team. I’m going to buy Dan some red hankies so he has something to cry into on the way back to Munster.
“I wish all participating teams the very best, with the obvious exception of Munster, and I’m looking forward to a great match,” the Senator said.
Green Party Chairman, Corkman, and MEP candidate for the South constituency Dan Boyle added “It should be a great game and certainly Munster will not find it easy. Leinster showed great resolve in their quarter final and both sides know how to run the ball.
“Differences on rugby loyalties are not unusual in the Greens. Our Party Leader and Environment Minister John Gormley, who represents the Dublin South East constituency, is an avowed Munster fan from his school days in Limerick. But Energy Minister Eamon Ryan, who played second row when he was at Gonzaga, would have another opinion.
“I expect Munster to dig deep on Saturday, put Leinster to the sword and make their way towards victory in Europe. In that respect much like myself!”
