Major renovation planned for Blanchardstown Village

March 9, 2009

Fingal County Council has launched plans for a major refurbishment of Blanchardstown Village as part of its Development Strategy.

The Development Strategy aims to regenerate the greater Blanchardstown area by enhancing the character of the village, increasing public facilities and boosting local businesses.

Draft plans include a civic space for residents, improved traffic controls and parking facilities, new cycle routes and cycle parking facilities, development of greenfill sites and preservation and enhancement of the heritage features of the village.

Green Party Senator and European candidate, Deirdre De Burca, welcomed the news saying that the plans would provide greater amenities for locals.

“I am delighted that plans have finally been drafted for the Blanchardstown development project. Blanchardstown is a busy satellite town with a population of more than 100,000. It is home to the Blanchardstown Institute of Technology, Connolly Hospital and the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.

“These plans will encourage future development in the area and will provide a much-needed boost for local business. Traffic calming plans, improved parking facilities and new cycle routes will help to reduce congestion around the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre and make the village more accessible for local people.

According to Local Election Candidate for the Green Party in Blanchardstown Roderic O’Gorman there are plans to landscape the Village, install underground cables, remove unauthorised signs and improve the Village environment. “I will monitor these plans to ensure that they fit in with the local look and feel of the Village” said Roderic O’Gorman.

“I urge all Blanchardstown residents to look at the plans and submit their suggestions to the Fingal Planning Department. Blanchardstown is the largest urban area in Fingal and we must make sure that these plans will have a positive impact on all residents,” added Senator De Burca.

Copies of the Draft Development Plan are on public display at the Civic Offices in Grove Road and in the Blanchardstown Public Library until March 26. The plans are also available on the Fingal County Council website.
