Major renovation needed to save Swords Village – De Burca
Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has called for a major renovation of Swords village to boost local business.
The Senator’s remarks follow the news that gaming store GameStop has relocated its branch from Swords Village to the Pavilion Shopping Centre, leaving another business premises on Main Street empty.
Senator De Burca said, “At the present time it is essential to boost commercial activity in Swords village. The Swords Town Centre Forum is considering a number of options to rejuvenate the Village including improved car parking facilities and better traffic management.
“A similar renovation plan for Blanchardstown village in West Dublin has been unveiled. It includes a number of measures that could be considered for Swords including the development of a civic space for residents, new cycle routes and cycle parking facilities, and preservation and enhancement of the heritage features of the village.
Local Green Party Representative, Ken Duffy said “The Swords Town Centre Forum should consider creating incentives for local-based business and service industries in order to stimulate entrepreneurs in Swords and the surrounding area. Such a redevelopment would enhance the village and attract retailers.
“Redevelopment of towns and villages can stop us losing our cultural heritage and sense of community. Swords village has been at the centre of the Fingal community for many years. It is an important asset to local people and we must do everything in our power to save it,” added Ken Duffy.
