Deburca calls on Dubliners to support Earth Hour

March 19, 2009

Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, urged Irish businesses and households to get involved in a worldwide Earth Hour to highlight the problems caused by global warming.Businesses, households and governments in more than 1,000 countries around the world will cut the lights for an hour to show their support for the fight against global warming.

Earth Hour will happen at 8.30pm on Saturday March 23rd and many of Dublin’s historical buildings will take part in the initiative including the Customs House, Government Buildings and Leinster House.

Senator De Burca said, “The Earth Hour started as a grassroots initiative and has spread to cities across the globe. The success of Earth Hour proves that ordinary people can push environmental issues to the top of the political agenda.

“Last year Irish people saved 50 megawatts of electricity by turning off lights – about 2,000kg of carbon. This year I hope that we can save double this amount of energy.

“I urge Dubliners to participate and use Earth Hour to discuss ways that their household can permanently fight global warming. Small habits such as turning off the house lights when no one is home and turning the television off standby can save your family money and help the environment.

“In the fight against global warming, every little helps,” added Senator De Burca.
