Ghost bikes highlight dangers to Dublin cyclists

February 23, 2009

Green Party Senator Deirdre De Burca has urged Dublin drivers to pay attention to cyclists following the launch of the Dublin ghost bike scheme.

Ghost Bikes are memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque in memory of the victim.

The first ghost bike was placed at Harold’s CrossBridge last Saturday to commemorate the death of Zu Zhang Wong, a young Chinese man who was killed in a collision with a lorry on January 14th.

Senator De Burca said, “The ghost bike scheme is an important scheme to promote safety on Dublin roads. The memorials serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and aim to encourage safer driving and raise the awareness of the dangers faced by cyclists on Dublin roads.

“I hope that these bikes will serve as a reminder to people of the dangers cyclists face on Irish roads. Ghost bikes have become a worldwide movement and can be found in 75 cities across America and Europe.

“A large number of cyclists have been killed on Dublin roads. Many of these deaths are preventable. Traffic and road planning plays an important part in ensuring the safety of cyclists.

“I want to thank the Dublin Cycling Campaign for implementing this important scheme. More of these bikes are erected on Dublin streets and will remind Dublin drivers that they must pay constant attention and vigilance,” added Senator De Burca.
