Dublin City Council to build longest cycle route in Europe

February 18, 2009

Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has given a cautious welcome to the news that Dublin City Council will build a 22km promenade and cycle path around DublinBay.

The proposed design will run from Sutton to Sandycove (S2S) and will be the longest urban seafront cycle route and promenade in Europe. Plans include an eight metre wide footpath which will form part of the city’s flood defences.

Senator De Burca said, “It is good to see that Dublin City Council has finally released plans for the S2S project. The cycle route and promenade could prove a major asset to the Dublin area by attracting tourism and encouraging local people to avail of the sea views along the coast.

“The route will be built in four stages. The second phase of the development – the S2S city centre link – is perhaps the most important because it includes additional cycle links to the city centre and new crossing points for bicycles.

“Green Party Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, allocated €3 million to the project in his carbon budget last October. We hope that these improved cycle facilities will encourage Dubliners to leave their cars at home.

The council must take every precaution to ensure that the work does not interfere with local homes as many parts of the route will pass residential areas that back on to the sea front.

“The Council must also ensure that building work does not affect the delicate coastal environment along the route. The Council’s environmental impact assessment has recently been approved by An Bord Pleanála and it must be followed to the letter to preserve EU-protected habitats for birds and other wildlife,” added Senator De Burca.

Dublin City Council has not yet released a date for construction of the plans.
