Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the opening of Ballymount Materials Recovery Facility – a new recycling centre that will process recyclable waste from green bins across Dublin.

The €27 million green bin recycling facility will process up to 100,000 tonnes of waste a year making it one of the largest recycling facilities in the European Union. It will handle waste from 360,000 homes in Dublin and will service four local authorities – DublinCity, Fingal, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin.

Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted to see the opening of Ballymount Materials Recovery Facility. The facility proves that the government is committed to a greener future for Ireland.

“The facility will prove a great boost for standards of recycling in Dublin and it means that we will no longer have to export our cardboard and paper waste for recycling. The facility will also be responsible for separating the contents of the green bin before baling them for shipment abroad.

“I also welcome the fact that the plant will provide jobs for the area. 85 people will be employed in the plant, with a further 100 people collecting green bins. These jobs will provide a much-needed boost for the local economy in Ballymount.

“I will continue to work on behalf of the people of Dublin to ensure that all their recycling needs are met,” added Senator De Burca.
