De Burca welcomes funding for Southside Community Development Projects and Organisations

January 30, 2009

Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the announcement of core funding for 70 Community Development Projects and community organisations across Dublin.

A total of €21.1 million in funding will be distributed to Community Development Projects and organisations across the country in 2009, with over a million euro going to Dublin-based projects.

The funding is granted under the Community Development Programme and covers the costs of staff and overhead costs for local resource centres in disadvantaged areas countrywide.

This funding to Projects and organisations is made possible due to the commitment made by the Government to provide support for the Community Sector contained in Towards 2016, and also meets commitments made under the National Development Plan.

Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted to hear of this substantial funding for local groups across Dublin. Community funding demonstrates the government’s on-going commitment to the targeting of resources to areas of greatest need.

“Local groups that will benefit from the funding include: Ballyfermot Travellers Action Project; Cherry Orchard Equine Centre; Bawnogue Women’s Development Group; Crumlin CDP; Dolcain Project / S.W Clondalkin; Drimnagh CDP; North Clondalkin CDP; Rialto Community Network Limited; Southside Travellers Action Group and Southside Women’s Action Network.

“Community Development Projects and community organisations are very important because they provide support to local families and groups within the community. This funding will help CDPs and community organisations to continue their important work,” added Senator De Burca.
