De Burca urges Dubliners to save Pepper Canister church

Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has urged the people of Dublin to save St. Stephen’s ‘Pepper Canister’ church on Mount Street, following the news that the church roof is in danger of collapse.

The church is known locally as the ‘Pepper Canister’ because the domed roof resembles a pepper pot. The dome of the roof has become detached from its supporting columns and is currently being supported by scaffolding.

Vital restoration work on the roof was due to begin this year but has been postponed due to a lack of funding. Repairs to the roof will cost an estimated €100,000.

Senator De Burca said, “St. Stephen’s is a significant Dublin landmark and the unique shape of the dome is a familiar part of the city skyline. St. Stephen’s Church was the last of a distinguished series of Georgian churches built by the Church of Ireland to service parishes around the city centre.

“The church has already received funding from the Department of the Environment, Dublin City Council, the Heritage Council and the Church of Ireland Fabric Fund along with donations from the congregation. This money has been used to fund restoration work to restore the façade of the building to its former glory.

“It would be a terrible shame to stop the restorations at this stage. I will continue to work in the Seanad to encourage funding of restoration projects on important Dublin buildings,” added Senator De Burca.
