Greens welcome fruit and vegetables for schools
Green Party Senator and Dublin candidate for Europe, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed news that the European Parliament has approved a proposal for the EU budget to subsidise at least one piece of fruit or vegetable per day for pre-school and school age children.
The new scheme is an attempt to encourage healthy eating habits in young children and curb rising levels of obesity. The free distribution scheme will begin in 2009 and will see EU funding of €90 million being given to schools around Europe.
Senator De Burca said, “It is difficult for parents to provide a nutritious and tasty packed lunch for school children, with fast food and sugary snacks a constant temptation for children.
“This scheme is aimed at children who are too young to realise the full importance of a healthy diet. Parents must assume responsibility for their children’s eating habits and encourage them to eat their five-a-day. I am glad that this scheme will help parents to encourage healthy eating within the home.
“The introduction of free fresh fruit and vegetables will have an immediate and positive impact on the lives of children attending schools in Lucan such as Lucan Educate Together, St. Andrew’s, St. Anne’s, St. Mary’s and Scoil Mhuire.
“I promise to monitor the scheme into the New Year and ensure that local schools in the Lucan area receive the benefits as soon as possible,” added Senator De Burca.
