European Science Olympics will be a great boost for Dublin City – De Burca

November 26, 2008

Green Party Senator and European Candidate, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the news that Dublin will host the EuropeanCity of Science meeting in July 2012.

The week-long event will bring approximately 8,000 visitors to Dublin city and is expected to be held in the Treasury Holdings-backed convention centre on the North side of Dublin’s River Liffey.

Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted to hear that Dublin has been chosen as the site to host the EuropeanCity of Science meeting in 2012. Hosting the City of Science week will allow Irish scientists to showcase the high standard of Irish research to the rest of Europe and will cement Ireland’s reputation as a leading centre for scientific and research excellence.

“The influx of delegates to the event will also give an important boost to the Dublin economy and will provide opportunities to promote science and science careers among young Irish people and their parents.

“In these difficult economic times it is important to encourage research and development in the scientific sector in order to fuel jobs in the future. Recent developments in the field prove that science is an ever-changing force that can positively affect all our lives.
“I would like to thank the government’s chief scientific adviser, Professor Patrick Cunningham, and his team for making a successful bid to Europe on behalf of the people of Dublin,” added Senator De Burca.
