De Burca welcomes grants for Tallaght community centres

Green Party Senator and European Candidate, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the news that two Tallaght-based community centres – Kingswood Community Leisure Centre and St. Murin’s Road Tallaght – will receive grants totalling €127,500.

Green Party Minister, Éamon Ó Cuív, announced a total of €2.4 million funding for 60 community-based projects around Ireland under a special strand of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs’ Community Services Programme.

The Community Halls and Facilities Strand of the Programme under which these projects were selected aims to support community facilities around Ireland by increasing the number of hours they are available to the public, improving their upkeep and ensuring that other services are delivered more effectively using existing community premises.

Senator De Burca welcomed the grants saying, “The Community Services Programme provides funding to groups that supply services to their local communities. Importantly the Programme also provides employment opportunities for the vulnerable in society including people with disabilities, long-term unemployed, travellers, lone parents and rehabilitated drug users.

“I am delighted to hear that grants will be given to two community-based projects in the Tallaght area. St. Murin’s Road Tallaght will receive €42,000 and Kingswood Community Leisure Centre will receive €85,500. This money can be used to employ full-time community workers to support the operation of the community facilities.

“This funding is very important for the communities involved in Tallaght. I will continue to work in Seanad Éireann on behalf of the people of South Dublin to ensure that they receive the community support that they need,” added Senator De Burca.
