De Burca welcomes grant for Mid-Sutton Community Centre

November 25, 2008

Green Party Senator and European Candidate, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the news that Mid-Sutton Community Centre will receive a grant worth €42,000.

Green Party Minister, Éamon Ó Cuív, announced a total of €2.4 million funding for 60 community-based projects around Ireland under a special strand of the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs’ Community Services Programme.

The Community Halls and Facilities Strand of the Programme under which these projects were selected aims to support community facilities around Ireland by increasing the number of hours they are available to the public, improving their upkeep and ensuring that other services are delivered more effectively using existing community premises.

Senator De Burca welcomed the grants saying, “The Community Services Programme provides funding to groups that supply services to their local communities. Importantly the Programme also provides employment opportunities for the vulnerable in society including people with disabilities, long-term unemployed, travellers, lone parents and rehabilitated drug users.

“I am delighted to hear that the Mid-Sutton Community Centre will receive €42,000 which can be used to employ full-time community workers to support the operation of the community facilities.

“This funding is very important for the Sutton community. I will continue to work in Seanad Éireann on behalf of the people of Fingal to ensure that they receive the community support that they need,” added Senator De Burca.
