November 28, 2008

Green Party Senator and European candidate for Dublin, Deirdre De Burca, has welcomed the announcement of €16,362 for community and voluntary organisations providing support to vulnerable older people in their local communities.

The Scheme of Community Support for Older People assists qualifying people, aged 65 years and over, by means of grants towards the once-off cost of installing monitored alarm systems, door and window locks, door chains, security lighting and smoke alarms.

In excess of €3.3million has been awarded to a wide range of local groups with 434 such groups benefiting to date in 2008. This funding is intended to facilitate the process of providing security equipment to older people when needed.

Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted to announce this further funding under the Scheme of Community Support for Older People. The purpose of this Scheme is to enhance the safety and provide peace of mind to vulnerable older members of our society.

“A total of €16,362 will be made available to older people in Northside communities and will be distributed through Darndale Belcamp Village Centre, Killiney Lyons Club and St Anne’s Afternoon Club. This funding will help to improve quality of life for older people and ensure their safety within the community.

“I wish to recognise the fine work done by community and voluntary organisations delivering the benefits of this Scheme and thank them on behalf of the Northside community,” added Senator De Burca.
