New Fingal landfill site should be reconsidered as major source of Dublin water says Green Party Euro Candidate

Green Party Dublin European candidate, Deirdre De Burca, has called for Fingal County Council to assess a major water source under a proposed landfill site in North County Dublin as a possible source of clean drinking water for Dublin.

The proposed landfill site is expected to house up to 500,000 tonnes of household rubbish, serving DublinCounty, and will replace existing landfill sites in Kildare and North Dublin which have almost reached full capacity.

Green Party TD for the Fingal area, Deputy Trevor Sargent, also recently made a public call for this water source to be examined to meet Dublin’s water requirements.

Senator De Burca said, “It makes no sense not to ignore this important possible drinking water source for Dublin. Local authorities in Dublin could explore the option of channelling water from the underground reservoir to Dublin homes. Currently there are plans in place for the government to run a pipeline from the Shannon in order to provide water for Dublin. This is obviously not a sustainable proposal”.

The site for the proposed Fingal landfill was chosen following an Environmental Impact Assessment and a period of consultation with the public. A study by Fingal County Council said that the site in Nevitt was chosen in accordance with national and international guidelines resulting in minimum environmental impact on the surrounding area.

“EU Directives state that the impact on environment and natural resources should be fully considered in a situation such as this. Surely we should examine the feasibility of using this natural water resource for the people of Dublin,” said Senator De Burca.
