De Burca welcomes Ranelagh ‘clean town’ ranking

October 30, 2008

Green Party Senator and Dublin Candidate for Europe, Deirdre de Burca, has welcomed the news that Ranelagh is the 10th cleanest town in Ireland.
According to a litter survey on behalf of the Irish Business Against Litter campaign, a record number of Irish towns and cities are now considered to be litter free. Ranelagh is the 10th cleanest town in Ireland, officially ranked as ‘clean to European norms.

Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted that Ranelagh has been highlighted as one of Ireland’s cleanest towns. Ranelagh has always been an important Dublin suburb and this ranking cements its place as one of the most scenic areas of Dublin.

“As a city, Dublin lies further down the list of clean towns and cities at number 35 and is considered to be ‘moderately littered’. I urge the people of Dublin to follow the lead set by Ranelagh residents and take pride in their local area.

“I am particularly concerned with the large amount of chewing gum being dropped on Irish streets. According to the IBAL survey, over 50 tonnes of chewing gum is dropped onto the streets of Ireland every year.

“Chewing gum is extremely difficult to remove and creates an unhygienic and unsightly mess. I promise to raise this matter in the Seanad and call for large fines for people who drop chewing gum onto our streets,” added Senator De Burca.
