De Burca welcomes plans for DART expansion
Green Party Senator and Dublin Candidate for Europe, Deirdre de Burca, has welcomed Iarnród Éireann’s plans to expand the Dublin DART network. Iarnród Éireann plans to add 432 new carriages to the DART network and increase the number of carriages operating on each DART service from 6 to 8 in an attempt to treble the number of DART passengers using the service in Dublin.
The company also plans to build a high capacity underground DART line which will run from the Docklands to Heuston Station and will serve as an interconnecting line for all Dublin train services, including the Luas and the Metro.
The refurbishments will be funded under the Transport 21 project.
Senator De Burca said, “I am delighted to hear of Iarnród Éireann’s new plans to improve the existing Dublin Dart service and to increase capacity. The number of commuters using DART services has increased by 40% in the past six years. These new plans will allow Iarnród Éireann to further increase their passenger numbers and enable more people to choose the DART as a reliable mode of transport.
“Traffic congestion is a major problem in Dublin city. Iarnród Éireann’s plans to introduce new DART routes and increase the number of carriages on existing lines will help to ease this congestion. The plans will have major environmental benefits and will benefit consumers by improving and providing more comfortable travel,” added Senator De Burca.
