A strong Europe is essential in an age of globalisation says De Búrca
Speaking at a public meeting in Portlaise organised by the National Forum on Europe, Senator Déirdre de Búrca, has claimed that a strong Europe is essential at a global level.
Speaking in favour of the Lisbon Treaty, the Green Party Senator said that in an age of accelerating globalisation, the European Union had an important role to play in terms of providing leadership in important areas such as tackling climate change, promoting human rights, encouraging international Fair Trade and addressing poverty in the developing world.
Senator de Búrca said that the Lisbon Treaty would help the European Union to make decisions more effectively, would strengthen its commitment to tackling climate change and would make the reduction of poverty the major aim of its development policy.

Senator de Búrca said that while the Lisbon Treaty is not a perfect treaty, it would help the European Union to continue to develop its ability to function effectively at a global level.
“The values of the European Union which are set out in the Lisbon Treaty include full employment, social progress, protection of the environment, equality between men and women, cultural and linguistic diversity, peace, security and the sustainable development of the Earth” she says. “The European Union needs to promote these values at a global level through the international institutions to which it belongs. It needs to ensure that the kind of globalisation that is occurring respects these values, and that globalisation ultimately benefits all of the members of the global community to which we now belong”.
