Greens meet Minister Tony Killeen to press action on Bray Fire Services

December 6, 2007

Green Party public representatives this week met with Minister for State with responsibility for Fire Services, Tony Killeen, to press for action in relation to the Bray Fire Services. Senator Déirdre de Búrca and Green Party councillor, Ciarán O’Brien met with Minister Killeen in Leinster House.

“We impressed upon Minister Killeen the importance of taking action on the Bray Fire Services” says Senator de Búrca. “We pointed out to him that the issue was being bounced backwards and forwards between Wicklow County Council and the Department of the Environment, and that responsibilities needed to be urgently clarified. We called for the issue of the Bray Fire Services to be prioritised by the Department”.

According to Cllr Ciarán O’Brien Minister Killeen spoke very positively about the establishment of a National Fire Authority. “We were very happy to hear this as it is clear that a fundamental restructuring of Fire Services across the country needs to happen if we are to bring these services into the 21st Century” says Cllr O’Brien. “The Minister also informed us that he has had no request as yet from Wicklow County Council for any additional funding for the Bray Fire Services”.

The Green Party public representatives say they intend to continue lobbying their colleague Minister John Gormley and the Minister of State, Tony Killeen to ensure that action is taken in relation to the Bray Fire Services. “This is a top priority for all of the Green Party public representatives in Bray and we will use our influence to try to bring the necessary changes about within an acceptable timeframe” says De Búrca.
