De Búrca supports Educate Together School for Greystones Following a recent public meeting in Greystones Rugby Club where the possibility of establishing an Educate Together School in Greystones was discussed, Green Party Senator, Déirdre de Búrca has expressed her support for such a development. “The Information Evening on the Educate Together Schools was attended by approximately 80 people” says De Búrca. “The majority of these were young parents who were very keen to hear about what the Educate Together model would have to offer their children. There clearly is a demand for this kind of school in the Greystones area which is experiencing unprecedented population growth in recent years”. “The Chairman of the Educate Together Schools, Paul Rowe, spoke at the meeting and explained what was different about these kinds of schools” says De Búrca. “He emphasized that they are multi-denominational, co-educational, child-centred and democratically run. It is the ethos of these schools to offer equality of access and esteem to all children, irrespective of their social, cultural and religious backgrounds”. “I have offered my support and the support of the Green Party in moving this important educational proposal forward” says De Búrca. “I believe that the town of Greystones would benefit from having a school of this kind to serve the children of the area”. Local Green Party Area Representative, Niall Byrne, says that the Charlesland site in Greystones could be a suitable location for an Educate Together School. He says that if the Department of Education were to support an Educate Together School being approved for Greystones, it could be officially sanctioned by April 2007.
