Bray- Greystones Cliff Walk needs ongoing maintenance and repair work says de Burca
The Cathaoirleach of Bray Town Council and Green Party councillor, Deirdre de Burca, has said that the Bray- Greystones Cliff Walk is in need of ongoing maintenance and repair works. Cllr de Burca made her remarks after walking from Bray to Greystones with other members of the Bray Electoral Area Committee. The councillors were accompanied by senior council officials including Bray Town Manager Mr Des O’Brien, and Special Projects Executive, Mr Sean Quirke.
“The purpose of the walk was to examine the state of the cliff walk, to assess the recent works that have been carried out on fencing and path-widening, and to decide what further works need to be done” says de Burca. “It was obvious that although the recent works have made significant improvements to the walk, much more remains to be done. In fact, an annual programme of works needs to be carried out on the walk to ensure that it remains in good condition for the many people that use it”.
The Green Party councillor claims that the 5,000 euros that was allocated for the cliff walk in Bray Town Council’s budget last year was not spent, something she says only came to light when this year’s budget was being discussed. “There is so much that needs to be done to the cliff walk including proper signage, effective drainage, sturdy fencing and appropriate surfacing of certain sections of the walk” she says. “Quite a few sections of the walk were almost impossible to use today because of the amount of mud and water that had gathered on those sections” she says. “Proper maintenance of the walk would ensure that this would not happen”.
De Burca has also expressed her concerns about the Greystones end of the cliff walk which she claims will be very negatively impacted if the proposed Greystones Harbour development proceeds. “Not alone will the very attractive views of Greystones beach and harbour be interfered with but problems are bound to arise from some of the operations that will be carried out next to the harbour area, including the mixing of concrete for the construction of the marina” she says. “Mr Sean Quirke, Special Project’s Executive, told us that the Greystones end of the cliff walk should remain open despite the proposed large scale construction works, but I believe that the public’s enjoyment of that section of the walk will undoubtedly be significantly reduced”.
